Acupuncture is one of the oldest and most widely used medical practices in the world. It involves the use of very fine needles or filaments – about the width of a human hair – inserted into the skin at key points and in specific combinations. This has been shown to improve the physiological functioning of the body through several bio-chemical and nervous system responses.
Too many people like getting a needle when they’re at the doctor’s office. That’s unless you’re one of the estimated 3 million people who get acupuncture every year. What exactly is acupuncture? It’s a centuries-old practise originating in China, offered today at nearly 42% of all hospitals providing integrative medicine. Specifically, it’s a technique performed by licensed providers that involve the gentle insertion of sterile needles into the skin at various places. So unlike needles used in doctors’ offices, acupuncture needles are hair-thin. I mean, it’s a slight pinch upon insertion.
Studies suggest that acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system to help promote physical health as well as emotional well-being. So if you’re curious if acupuncture might help you, talk to your health care providers. While acupuncture is not for everyone or every condition, it just might be the silver lining you’ve been looking for.
Prior to beginning your first acupuncture session, you will meet with the acupuncturist to discuss your health concerns and determine the appropriate care plan. When the session begins, you will lie face up, fully clothed. The acupuncturist will place between five and 20 needles into key points on the body. Although the needles are not painful, you may experience a slight aching sensation or heaviness, which results from the stimulation of the nervous system. Some experience immediate symptom relief; however, the number of sessions required will vary based on the condition being treated.
