Shockwave therapy or extracorporeal shock therapy is a modality that we utilize that uses high-energy sound waves to help heal tissues. Typically, we treat a lot of musculotendinous issues with shock wave therapy, things that seem to respond very well to shock wave therapy include plantar fasciitis, golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow, hamstring, tendonitis issues.
With shockwave therapy, these high-intensity sound waves are transmitted through the surface of the skin into the tissues we are targeting, those sound waves create some chemical changes within the body that have been shown to improve new blood vessel formation, flush out some chemicals that deal with and are associated with pain and inflammation, and can also help to decrease chronic inflammation. There may be a slight level of discomfort with shockwave therapy, depending on the area that’s treated in your level of pain. However, the good thing is the treatment only lasts about four minutes and the level of intensity of the treatment can be adjusted throughout. Typically, we see patients one time a week, one or two times a week for about six weeks as the typical protocol.
Shockwave therapy is not currently covered by insurance.
Shockwave therapy is very effective. Our patients tend to be very happy with their results, getting back to sport and life. In studies, you typically see up to 80% of patients report having pain treated and cured with the addition of shockwave therapy.
